The Ancient Order of Hibernians in America (AOH) was organized in the United States in nineteenth century New York City by Irish immigrants who banded together in protection of the Catholic Church. The AOH in Ireland was founded in the late seventeenth century for similar reasons particularly for the protection and preservation of the Catholic Clergy who were in peril of their lives under the Penal Laws. Today the Ancient Order of Hibernians in America has Divisions in over forty states; united with a common dedication to Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity.
The goals of the AOH and its sister organization Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (LAOH) are the promotion of the Catholic Faith, freedom and justice in Ireland and the preservation of Irish Culture. The AOH performs service and charitable activities and conducts social and educational events in support of these goals. Year-round activities are focused on all members of the family and include special events such as Children's Christmas Party and Easter Egg Hunt. In addition there are dances, traditional music sessions, religious services, lectures, parties, travel, and special festivals.
